About Learning Prep School

Learning Prep School LogoFounded in 1970, Learning Prep School (LPS) is an innovative educational milieu for students with language and learning disabilities. The students at LPS are all language and learning impaired. In addition to these issues the students often have accompanying visual, perceptual, motor deficits, significant social and self-esteem issues, attention deficit disorder or other secondary disabilities which interfere with their ability to learn.

The mission of LPS is to provide a safe learning environment for its students, teach them to respect others’ differences and provide them with the maximum opportunity to meet their individual potential. LPS is committed to providing all the services the students require.

Understanding that language skills are the basis for all learning, LPS’ unique curriculum integrates the teaching of these skills in all subjects by utilizing Thinking Maps as the underlined structure. LPS serves students from 145 communities throughout the New England area. It is the only school specifically designed for language- and learning-impaired students within the region and is now the largest 766-approved private day school that provides programs for children from the ages of 8 to18 years old.

LPS also has a unique record of accomplishments. While most language-impaired students fare poorly in the public schools, many students who enter LPS early in their academic lives are able to return to the public school setting. Having learned the necessary compensatory strategies, these students often complete high school and find employment. LPS also places a strong emphasis on helping students transition to the next steps in their lives whether it is joining the workforce, getting individual skill training, or attending college.

LPS has an excellent curriculum in its elementary, middle and high school – each incorporating the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The Department of Education in its recent audit stated “Learning Prep’s programs and curriculum maximizes students’ performance in the general curriculum. The school has taken many steps to provide all students with learning opportunities that prepare them to reach state graduation requirements. The staff has an excellent understanding of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.”

Students, who once saw themselves as failures, become active learners and risk takers. They learn priceless life lessons such as how to believe in themselves and how to be independent learners who live up to their maximum potential.
