Cambridge Who’s Who member, Karen Malta, has dedicated her time and talents to the Saguaro Detachment Marine Corps League, where her husband, John Malta, currently serves as Chaplain. Founded in 1923 by then Major General Commandant, John A. Lejune, the Marine Corps League supports and encourages the active duty and Reserve establishments of the United States Marine Corps.
In particular, the Marine Corps League preserves the traditions and promotes the interests of the Marine Corps by creating a bond of comradeship between those in the service and those who have returned to civil life. The League also provides aid to all active and retired marines and their widows and orphans. Most importantly, the League honors those marines who have given their lives for this Nation.
One of the most successful projects of the Saguaro Detachment of the Marine Corps League is Project Marine Care. Through this program, the League has sent more than 888 boxes of essential items to Marines serving in combat zones within the last 26 months. The program ships 10- to 15-pound boxes of necessities and comfort items to combat Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of the most requested items include AA and AAA batteries, baby wipes, Kool Aid packets, Oreos, magazines and books, disposable razors, deodorant, instant coffee, international phone cards and sunscreen. Marines also appreciate hearing from “folks back home” through letters and cards sent with the care packages. Many of them write back to show their appreciation.

In an effort to raise funds for the Saguaro Detachment Marine Corps League, Karen Malta has organized a group cruise through her travel agency, www.TravelWithTheWind.com. A $15 donation to Project Marine Care is included in the cost of this all-inclusive getaway. In addition, Carnival Cruise Lines has agreed to match donations resulting in a total donation of $30 per person to Project Marine Care. The 3-day cruise will take place from June 5 to June 8, 2009 aboard the Carnival Paradise. The cruise starts and ends in Los Angeles (Long Beach), California and includes a stop at Ensenada, Mexico and a “fun day at sea” before returning.
Cabin reservations are only $25 per person with a second deposit due in February and final payment due in March. For cruise rates and more information, please visit www.TravelWithTheWind.com group cruises page or contact Ms. Malta at (480) 390-0489 or travelwiththewind@yahoo.com.
